Green Forests Works (GFW) announced an impressive 42 reforestation projects from their 2015 efforts that included; 239,720 trees planted, over 386 acres, 210 partners, and 2,140 volunteers. The 2016 planting season recently concluded in late May with significant strides in both education and outreach. Green Forests Work’s (GFW), a Baum supported program has the mission to re-establish healthy and productive forests on formerly coal mined lands in Appalachia. Their vision is to create a renewable and sustainable multi-use resource that will provide economic opportunities while enhancing the local environment. GFW reforestation projects provide jobs for equipment operators, nursery workers, and tree planters, and improve the environment by eradicating exotic species and restoring ecosystem services. Since 2009, GFW planted more than 1.59 million trees on more than 2,500 acres.
