San Francisco photographers Kari Orvik and Dave Elfving created a pop-up tintype studio sponsored by The Baum Foundation at SF Camerawork on July 9th for students and mentors of First Exposures. The San Francisco based youth mentoring program developed images using an old technique for making photographs during the four-hour event. Guests had their portraits made so attendees were able to observe and participate in the production of this 19th Century traditional photographic process.
The Baum Foundation donated the event to support the nationally recognized youth photography and mentoring program at First Exposures that strives to make a long-term impact on the lives of high-need, under-served youth in the San Francisco Bay Area. First Exposures provides youth aged 11 to 18 with the opportunity to engage with photography in a classroom with guidance from a photographer who serves as both a mentor and a positive adult role model.
