This month Baum Award winner Mike Brodie will publish his second book, Tones of Dirt, filled with pages of his signature style – Polaroid photographs from his time as a train hopper. The look into this unique life style and the intensity of Brodie’s work is one that should not be missed.
At 17 Brodie began traveling across the United States as a train hopper. On his journey he brought a Polaroid camera and began documenting his new lifestyle. Through his unknowingly distinct choice of medium Brodie gained the nickname “The Polaroid Kid.” In 2008 Brodie won The Baum Award for Emerging Photographer and his photography has since been highly sought after. While he has not created other bodies of work, his time as “The Polaroid Kid” is still being talked about today. He published his first book of photographs in 2012 called A Period of Juvenile Prosperity. Both books are available online.
