In 2010, conservation photographer Daniel Beltrá documented the Deepwater Horizon oil rig blowout in the Gulf of Mexico. The stunning images he captured resulted in SPILL: Images of the Gulf, an unforgettable collection of work that won the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award and the Lucie Award for the International Photographer-Deeper Perspective. Beltrá’s work was also chosen as one of the six finalists for the Critical Mass for Photolucida.
In time for the 5 year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon environmental disaster, work from Beltra’s SPILL project has been featured in a new publication titled OVERDevelopment, OVERPopulation, OVERShoot (“OVER”), produced through the collaboration of the Foundation for Deep Ecology, Population Media, and the Population Institute. This publication is the centerpiece of the Global Population Speakout campaign – an effort to educate and inspire “ambassadors of information” on the impacts of human population on the planet.
Daniel Beltrá is also a fellow and board member of the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP), a partner of The Baum Foundation. Beltrá has collaborated with The Baum Foundation on various projects over the years including the Patagonia RAVE project and the exhibition of his SPILL: Images of the Gulf project in 2013.
