The 3 day Youth Action Island Summit will serve as a kick off for the 5 Gyres Institutes’ weeklong expedition from Eleuthera to Bermuda to conduct further research on the plastic pollution near the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre.
The 5 Gyres Institute, The Island School, Cape Eleuthera Institute, Jack Johnson and All at Once have partnered together to bring 75 local Bahamian, U.S., and international students to the Cape Eleuthera Institute to learn about and generate solutions to plastic pollution for island nations. As an island on the border of the North Atlantic gyres, The Bahamas’ once unspoiled beaches have been polluted with both their own plastic waste as well as plastic waste from other nations that washes up on The Bahamas shore.
Activists, artists, scientists and educators will lead workshops and activities aimed at providing tools and information to empower the young participants to leverage their voices on this important issue. Jack Johnson, Hawaiian born musician and activist, will be at the summit to share his songs and a film crew will document the event to inspire others to get involved. The 5 Gyres Institute is a continuing partner and supported program of The Baum Foundation.
