On Saturday September 20, 2014, the Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS) lit up the United Nations Headquarters in New York City with 39-story images to illuminate the invisible world of extinction. Using a projection unit designed by Obscura Digital, they presented an 11-minute, multi-sensory experience to bring attention to the impact humanity has on species decline, habitat destruction, and the acidification of our oceans.
“Movies, imagery, and media are the most powerful weapons we have at our disposal – weapons of mass construction. Together, we have a unique opportunity to chart the course for a new future. Change is literally in the palm of our hands, but we need the masses to understand what we stand to lose,”says Louie Psihoyos, founder of the Oceanic Preservation Society and director of Racing Extinction and The Cove.
The show set the stage for the People’s Climate March and UN Climate Summit, in addition to kicking off the campaign for the Oceanic Preservation Society documentary Racing Extinction(formerly “6”), a project The Baum Foundation has sponsored since the early stages of its development. The film takes a candid look at the current state of the planet’s health and exposes the causes behind the rapidly increasing rate of extinction among animal and plant species, marking the sixth major extinction in biological history. Video captured at the UN event will be included in the film’s final scene.
