Lab and Lunch at the Exploratorium—Wednesday March 19, 2014 12:00 p.m.
Exploratorium, Pier 15, Bay Observatory Gallery, San Francisco
This event recognizes the collaborative efforts of California State Governments and North Coast tribal councils to establish a Marine Protected Area (MPA) along California’s North Coast representing the final extension of a state-wide initiative to establish a network of MPAs along its entire coastline in a step to preserve and restore healthy ocean and estuary habitats.
Hawk Rosales, director of the InterTribal Sinkyone Wilderness Council, will discuss the process of navigating between the State’s environmental agenda and the rights, culture and values of indigenous peoples, an effort that has brought positive attention to the role and value of indigenous cultures and practices in sustainable development and environmental initiatives. The talk will also include a screening of the 10-minute film Stewards of the Wild Sea, produced by Hawk Rosales and The Baum Foundation.
