The 5 Gyres Institute will embark on its 17th research expedition in August 2016 to a remote region of Artic waters along the Northwest Passage to conduct research and engage more community leaders globally about plastic marine pollution. The 5 Gyres team will be aboard the ship, Akademik Sergey Vavilov, a Russian-made Artic exploration vessel managed by 53 crew members.
Baum Foundation support is focused on a 5 Gyres Community Action Campaign on Microbeads to spur an environmental education & leadership program called “My Life, My Land, My Sea” in partnership with the United States Forest Service and California State University, Chico. 5 Gyres Institute will be working in close collaboration with One Ocean and Vancouver Aquarium to explore the abundance of marine pollution in remote Artic waters and has successfully launched 16 past ocean research expeditions focused on international education and awareness of ocean plastic pollution. While research expedition, scientists and citizens will collect plastic and water samples and provide data designed to empower legislators in their decision-making and ongoing education for the public. Stay tuned!
