Educating Communities about Coral Reef Conservation
Coral Reef Alliance – Meso American Reef System 2003
Busy Underwater.
Coral reefs face many challenges: global climate change, the demands of the tourist industry, pollution and many other stressors.
The Baum Foundation worked closely with the Coral Reef Alliance in 2003 to direct support to Marine Park Management programs that help communities build infrastructure and knowledge.
These programs supported:
- Education on Coral Reef Preservation to train local groups to collaborate on managing marine reserves with the goal of building the capacity of park managers to partner with community stakeholders in coral reef conservation, and
- Sustainable Tourism—which helps build consensus around guidelines for sustainable tourism and codes of conduct for recreation providers.
The Baum Foundation supported trainings in sustainable practices, pilot testing of guidelines in specific sites, technical assistance, and delivery of small grants to encourage businesses to adopt guidelines for Marine Protected Areas.
