Ocean Doctor and Project Red Alerta announced a new community project launched in Cocodrilo in 2016. Cocodrilo is a small community on the southern shore of Cuba’s Isle of Youth (Isla de Juventud). Cocodrilo students and Red Alerta team members proudly constructed new signs and waste baskets to encourage their community not to litter and to spur beach clean ups. The Red Alerta project placed an emphasis on the critical importance of keeping these pristine waters clean.
Red Alerta team member, Nene Morejon, led the Red Alerta team and students on a beach cleanup and posting signs at the entrance to Cocodrilo, stating “We care for our coastal marine biodiversity – Project Red Alerta”.
Project Red Alerta is a unique partnership of Ocean Doctor’s Cuba Conservancy Program and the community of Cocodrilo. Red Alerta participants learn about environmental issues and protection, coral reef ecosystems, their importance and threats, and how to collect and prepare data to share with the scientific community and the public. The important work of these dedicated team members and students will help keep these beautiful coastal areas clean from trash which ensures the overall maintenance of Cocodrilo’s marine life and habitats.
