As part of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation’s Capitol Hill Ocean Week, better known as CHOW, Ocean Doctor President and Founder Dr. David E. Guggenheim participated on a panel discussion entitled The Promise and Potential for Collaborative Marine Conservation with Cuba. Other experts on the panel included Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, State Department Ambassador David Balton, Environmental Attorney Robert Muse, and Cuban Ambassador Jose Cabañas. The Ocean Doctor team has been involved in collaborative marine research in Cuba for fifteen years through their Cuba Conservancy Program. One of the few points of collaboration between the U.S. and Cuba has been in the field of marine research and conservation. With the embargo lifting, a new diplomatic relation between Cuba and the United States is taking shape. The panelists share their insights on how to maintain Cuba’s healthy vibrant ecosystems, to address new threats for a post embargo era, and their hopes for increased opportunities for collaborative marine research.
