Representatives of California Native American tribes, the California Natural Resources Agency, and environmental and fishing groups—known collectively as the California Ocean Wilderness Delegation will convene at the 10th World Wilderness Congress in Salamanca Spain, October 4th – 10th to present information on a remarkable achievement in marine conservation that has resulted in a dual victory for north coast Native American tribes’ customary marine rights and the ocean environment along California’s world-renowned coastline. The achievement was realized through a collaborative implementation of the California Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Initiative, which has established a network of marine protected areas (MPAs) along California’s 1,770 km shoreline, from the state’s border with Mexico, to its border with Oregon (approximately the linear distance between Salamanca, Spain and Croatia). The California Ocean Wilderness Delegation includes tribal representatives of InterTribal Sinkyone Wilderness Council and Smith River Rancheria of the Tolowa Indian Tribe, State of California Natural Resources Agency Secretary John Laird, NRDC, California Ocean Science Trust, and others.
