Room to Breathe documentary shares “mindfulness techniques” to reduce bullying and increase focus.

It wasn’t long after they started setting aside part of the school day for students to focus on deep breathing and silent reflection that teachers at Bolinas-Stinson Union School District said they started noticing a sense of “stillness” and “peace” in their classrooms.

The hallways of this small, one-school K-8 district in Marin County still clamor at times with restless, rambunctious youngsters. But officials here say they’be also started to notice the effects of teaching a form of meditation known as mindfulness – a practice that is increasingly popular at schools around the Bay Area and nationwide.

“I have noticed a huge difference,” said Lynn Cheatham, the meditation specialist hired by the school this year after an administrator saw a documentary [Room to Breathe] about a mindfulness program at a San Francisco middle school.
