Racing Extinction – Featured at Aspen Ideas Festival 2015

The 2015 Aspen Ideas Festival hosted a public screening and discussion of the film Racing Extinction by Director Louie Psihoyos (The Cove, 2009) that addresses the rapidly increasing extinction rates in our present era and the role of human kind as it’s playing out today.  Extinction rates seen today are now ranked alongside the other 5 mass extinctions in biological history marking this epoch–known as the “Anthropocene” referring to the measurable human induced changes to the earth and its atmosphere–as the 6th mass extinction.   As photographer, documentary filmmaker and Executive Director of the Oceanic Preservation Society, Psihoyos has circled the globe dozens of times for National Geographic and is using his experiences to spark action in communities throughout the world.

The Aspen Ideas Festival launched in 2005 and provides a gathering place for leaders across numerous disciplines to “engage in deep and inquisitive discussion of the ideas, issues and solutions that both shape our lives and challenge our times,” thus offering an ideal venue for the film Racing Extinction and the globally pertinent topics it covers.  Connecting to key topics of conservation, biodiversity and climate change, the Baum Foundation has supported the project Racing Extinction since its inception.  Racing Extinction takes us to inhabitants all over the world, and to places many would not venture to go, exposing new ideas about our carbon output using provocative new visual cinematic tools.
