Premiering BELLA GAIA “Hotspots to Hopespots”

UNEP’s International Children’s Painting Competition Winners – Hosted by Bayer – Premiers BELLA GAIA’s Hotspots to Hopespots Film

BELLA GAIA’s film, Hotspots to Hopespots, will close the UNEP Bayer reception for the North American winners of UNEP’s International Children’s Painting Competition on the theme of Water. The two winners for North America are, 1^st place: Jessica Qiu, 8 years old from San Jose, California and 2^nd place Amy Zhu, from Fremont, California.

The film features stories using satellite data from UNEP and NASA, and showcases visualizations of Hotspots, emissions by country, and environmental changes taking place over short time frames. The ‘before’ and ‘after’ images, some of which span a 35-year period, offer striking snapshots of local ecosystem transformation. Hotspots to Hopespots also features success stories happening on every continent highlighting what we can do when we work together.

“The data and the topics we have selected for this multimedia experience weave together a compelling story that illustrates anthropogenic change on planet Earth, but also hopeful signs of change,” says Williams. “Through BELLA GAIA’s method of artistically translating data, I hope to move people and inspire action that will help us find solutions that will make our future more sustainable”, he added.

Held at Portland State University’s Native American Student and Community Center, the International Children’s Painting Competition show is a 50-piece exhibition featuring the top North American and Portland winners’ artwork. The paintings were selected from 708 submissions received from students in 17 U.S. states and the District of Columbia and three Canadian provinces.
