Workshop attendees discuss goals for data assessment (April 2016)

On April 26th and 27th, The Baum Foundation supported Marine Applied Research and Exploration (MARE) to host a workshop about Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) that convened scientists, ocean managers, and other experts involved in underwater research in the Channel Islands.

The long history of protection, extraordinarily productive and species-rich waters, in this area make this network of MPAs an important resource as the group focused their attention on data going back 30 years. A number of different organizations and research institutions attending have been collecting underwater data around the Channel Islands from numerous scientific disciplines; including Channel Islands National Park, Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO), U.C. Santa Barbara, Reef Check, Marine Applied Research and Exploration (MARE) and others. The workshop presented an opportunity for Channel Islands experts to connect with others, review the existing data, look for overarching trends and themes, and begin to assess efficacy of networked MPA design that will be shared with the State of California and the public in 2017.
