Photographer Jaimie Warren, based out of Kansas City, MO and Brooklyn, New York was selected as the recipient of the 2014 Baum Award for an Emerging American Photographer. Eclectic and lively, Warren’s work explores the world of media and identity through a series of self-portrait recreations of photo-shopped scenes by anonymous users on the web that she assembles without the use of photo-shop. With a background in performance art and community outreach, Warrens work is alive with energy. “I have taken complete control of these staged scenes, and I am bringing contemporary culture and humor into the installations, costumes and characters I am creating” says Warren.
The Baum Award consists of a $10,000 cash grant and a 3-month exhibition at SF Camerawork. The Baum Award is the only award in the U.S. to single out ‘Emerging’ American photographers for support, and is the largest national award among the grant and fellowships available in photography.
In response to receiving the award, Ms Warren comments: “This award is so unique, and this sort of support for an artist is what allows them to truly experiment with ideas, giving them the time and resources to problem solve in a way that can completely turn their practice around. It has the power to bring a new level of professionalism to my work that I would not normally have access to. This comes at such a perfect time in my career, and I am so incredibly grateful and will strive to make the absolute most out of this opportunity.”
