Ocean GEMS is a current multi-media communications and outreach program that connects girls with women marine scientists leading to greater representation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

Recent studies & surveys reveal that one of the indicators of success in science is whether or not a girl has a mentor. Because girls are not always in a place where mentors can be found in the field of ocean sciences, GEMS will establish those relationships across distances, connecting Ocean GEMS mentors globally via social media, YouTube, podcasts, the Google Earth Ocean portal, and schools. Capitalizing on the voracious appetite teens have for more interesting things to do, GEMS will provide quality opportunities for teens to meet mentors who can appear at after school programs, summer camps, and visiting National Marine Sanctuaries, museums and aquaria.
Ocean GEMS mentors will motivate & empower girls to explore careers in marine sciences by networking with, and being mentored by, these young women marine scientists with whom teenage girls can relate.
